Clinical and Financial Strategies for the Extended Care Professional

Executive Desk:

What Keeps You Up At Night?

Over the past 17 years we’ve posed this same question to hundreds of executives. Invariably, their greatest challenges remain the same. This is what executives say weighs most heavily on their minds: how do I manage employees’ performance, what can we do to retain our talent pool, how do we keep our current customers happy and how can we increase our revenues?

ECPN welcomes interesting, insightful contributions from its readers for feature articles and departmental columns. Guidelines for the features and departments are as follows:

Feature Articles:
These articles may cover all aspects of patient care delivery in the long-term and home care settings. ECPN strives to express the importance of the relationship between the clinical and financial aspects of each of these topics.

Length.
The body of the feature articles need not conform to strict word counts. As a general rule, however, feature articles should be approximately 2,500 words in length. Sidebars are encouraged, as well as photographs, charts, tables, or other graphics (see Artwork).

Departments:
ECPN welcomes submissions to its departments. Article submissions for departments of ECPN should be approximately 1,400 words in length. In addition to the topics listed under Feature Articles, editorial may be submitted for the following departments:

Letters to the Editor:
This department highlights interesting letters from the readership discussing the content of the publication, controversial issues, or hot topics.

This department highlights new product launches, summaries of major events and conferences, important legislation, unusual happenings, and industry news.

Director’s Chair:
This department will highlight editorial tailored specifically for the director of nursing. Articles may discuss any of the aforementioned topics.

Executive Summary:
Similar to the Director’s Chair, this department will focus on those areas pertinent to the role of the “C” level executive within the extended care setting.

Artwork:
Submission of photographs, charts, tables, and other graphics is encouraged. If the artwork has been previously published or is based upon previously published work, written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce or adapt the artwork must accompany the submission. All photos, tables, and other graphics must be clearly labeled and captioned. Tables should be numbered in order of citation in the article. Digital artwork is acceptable provided the image has a minimum resolution of 266 dpi and is saved as a “tif” or “jpeg” file format.

Sidebars:
ECPN will consider for publication sidebars either submitted alone or with an article. Some sidebars may not appear in the print publication but will be used on the ECPN website or eNewsletter. Sidebars may be up to 500 words in length. Artwork may accompany the sidebars if space permits.

References:
Information from other published works should be completely and accurately referenced in the order in which it is cited in the text. List references in numerical order according to the American Medical Association Manual of Style. Do not list references that are not cited in the text. Provide a list of any individuals interviewed for the article and include
the interviewee’s full name, title, affiliation, address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address.

Editing:
While the editors will attempt to preserve the author’s voice whenever possible, all accepted manuscripts, letters, sidebars, or any submitted material will be edited for space and clarity, according to the magazine’s style and format.

Submitting:
Whenever possible, send queries or summaries of articles via e-mail prior to submitting the entire article. Articles may be submitted via e-mail or through the mail. If submitting through e-mail, please attach the file as a Microsoft Word document. Digital images should not be embedded in the Microsoft Word document. Since they must be a minimum of 266 dpi for adequate print quality, they may be sent as separate attachments in individual e-mails. If sending a hard copy of the manuscript by mail, please include a digital file on disk and either camera-ready artwork or digital images on a separate disk with a minimum of 266 dpi. Macintosh and PC are both acceptable platforms. On the title page of the submission, please include the corresponding author’s full name, credentials, affiliation, complete mailing address, daytime phone number, fax number, and e-mail address. If there is more than one author, provide the complete name, credentials, affiliation, city, and state for each author.
