Clinical and Financial Strategies for the Extended Care Professional

Executive Desk:

Effective Leaders are Effective Managers, Too

Why is it that no one aspires to be a good manager these days? While good leaders are essential for galvanizing people and moving organizations forward, managers are not any less important. Managers have to get things done through others. The manager is supposed to plan, organize, coordinate, and control.

Mölnlycke Offers Silver Dressing with Safetac Technology

Mölnlycke Health Care US, LLC, introduces Mepilex® Ag, the first silver dressing with Safetac® technology. This new product combines the excellent exudate management properties of Mepilex and Safetac soft silicone adhesive technology with a powerful silver compound.
In-vitro studies show that Mepilex Ag dressings deliver sustained, effective release of silver and rapid onset of antimicrobial action. Mepilex Ag begins killing pathogens commonly found in wounds within 30 minutes and offers sustained effect on pathogens for up to seven days.
Safetac is a patented soft silicone adhesive technology that offers atraumatic application and removal of the product. Dressings with Safetac technology not only minimize trauma to the wound but prevent maceration by sealing around the surrounding skin. This unique combination of silver and Safetac technology offers clinicians an antimicrobial effect while minimizing trauma and pain to the wound and the patient. The dressing is indicated for the management of exudating wounds, such as leg and foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, donor sites, and partial-thickness burns.

Wander and Night-Motion Alerts Help Keep Residents Safe

QuietCare®, a behavioral monitoring system created by Living Independently Group, Inc., helps care for assisted living residents of all frailty levels by allowing them to live with a greater level of independence. To further help healthcare professionals provide the highest level of care, QuietCare introduces two features to keep residents safer—wander alerts for dementia-related illnesses and night-motion alerts for seniors at risk for falling.

Wander alerts notify staff when a residents leaves his or her room at night, which is a behavior common among persons with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. An alert message is immediately sent to the staff signaling that the resident has most likely wandered out of his or her room.
Night-motion alerts notify staff that a resident at risk for falling during normal sleep times is leaving his or her bed to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Bedroom sensors are positioned to trigger as soon as a senior leaves the bed, sending an alert message to staff so they can check and make sure the resident is not in need of help.
QuietCare remotely identifies any potential medical emergencies, such as possible bathroom falls, and automatically alerts caregivers to these situations, allowing them to provide early intervention. It monitors individuals’ daily activities, such as meal preparation, medication dosages, and overall activity in the home. The system also provides alerts when the temperature is dangerously high or low.
