Clinical and Financial Strategies for the Extended Care Professional

Executive Desk:

Effective Leaders are Effective Managers, Too

Why is it that no one aspires to be a good manager these days? While good leaders are essential for galvanizing people and moving organizations forward, managers are not any less important. Managers have to get things done through others. The manager is supposed to plan, organize, coordinate, and control.

Liko Introduces Viking XS Mobile Patient Lift

Liko, Inc., introduces the Viking XS mobile patient lift, one of the most compact floor lifts on the market. Designed to operate in restricted spaces, its 21-inch width permits it to be easily moved through narrow doorways or walkways.

The Viking XS is the latest member of Liko’s complete family of Viking Series lifts, featuring 5 separate models—in sizes XS, S, M, L, and XL—designed to enable easy matching of lift size and capacity to patient population, size, and condition. The application flexibility of the Viking lifts, use of common spare parts, and identical operating procedures all contribute to simplifying the overall purchase, reducing caregiver injuries, improving performance, and reducing both short- and long-term costs.
The Viking XS weighs only 55 lbs yet has a lifting capacity of 350 lbs. This makes the unit ideal for lifting assignments in the home care and long-term care markets, where space might be at a premium and patient lifts must be able to a variety of tough assignments. The use of lightweight construction materials gives the entire Viking Series an outstanding capacity-to-weight ratio.
Optional pivoting arm rests can easily be added to Viking Series lifts for ambulation, gait training, or enhanced caregiver-maneuvering leverage. The pivoting arm rests help enable a qualified nurse or therapist to evaluate the patient’s level of ambulatory independence and institute rehabilitative measures if necessary.

Medline Introduces Resource Kit for Incontinence Guidelines

Medline Industries, Inc., introduces a new comprehensive resource kit, Medline Compass F315 Survey Readiness, to help long-term care facilities comply with important new Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS) incontinence guidelines under Federal Tag F315 (Tag F315).

The tool kit provides resources for administrators, directors of nursing (DONs), nurses, Minimum Data Set (MDS) coordinators, and nurse assistants to help them meet CMS incontinence guidelines and provide the best-possible patient outcomes. The kit contains helpful, practical tools for improved monitoring, documentation, and care. The kit also outlines which incontinence products should be used for each type of incontinence and precisely how they should be used, according to the new guidelines. In addition, Compass contains a video program providing up to 4 continuing education (CE) contact hours for staff.
The kit also includes one administrator copy and 3 nursing cart copies of the“Survey Readiness Resource Book,” which provides all the critical information that nursing home staff members are required to know under Tag F315. It provides an administrative copy of the actual Tag F315 guidelines with corresponding solutions to meet these regulations as well as practical tools, such as urinary continence assessment and implementation forms, a DVD with CE programs, disposable rulers for obtaining proper fit measurements of patients, and special forms to help staff prevent skin breakdown.
