Clinical and Financial Strategies for the Extended Care Professional

Executive Desk:

Effective Leaders are Effective Managers, Too

Why is it that no one aspires to be a good manager these days? While good leaders are essential for galvanizing people and moving organizations forward, managers are not any less important. Managers have to get things done through others. The manager is supposed to plan, organize, coordinate, and control.

HEALTHPOINT’s Xenaderm Ointment Available in a 30-g Tube

HEALTHPOINT® (Fort Worth, Tex) announces that Xenaderm (Balsam Peru, Castor Oil USP/NF, Trypsin USP) Ointment is now available in a 30-g tube.
The ointment will give clinicians in acute and extended care settings more flexibility when treating patients with varying wound sizes. Patients with smaller wounds will benefit from this new 30-g size, while those with larger wounds can continue to benefit from the 60-g tube.
The ointment is intended for the treatment of partial-thickness wounds, particularly for incontinence-associated injury to the skin. It physiologically stimulates blood flow in the capillary bed and serves as a protective covering between the skin and external moisture, irritants, and infective agents. When applied to a sensitive area, a temporary stinging sensation may be noted.

FLA Orthopedics’ Foot Orthotics Provide Support, Comfort

FLA Orthopedics, Inc. (Miramar, Fla), a manufacturer of orthopedic, sports medicine, and bracing products, introduces the SoftPoint® 3/4 Flexible Cork Orthotics.

The product provides support to the arch of the foot. The high contours prevent pronation (the inward rolling of the ankles) and relieve pain associated with many foot conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, weak or fallen arches, and aching, fatigued feet. The thin, flexible, lightweight base is made of a cork/EVA composite material that absorbs shock and molds to the natural contours of the foot for a customized feel. The deep heel cup cradles the heel and helps stabilize the foot. The breathable fabric helps reduce perspiration and shear, minimizing blisters and calluses.

Heelift Suspension Boots Aid in Compliance with Medicare Tag F314

Heelift® Original and Heelift® Smooth Suspension boots (DM Systems, Evanston, Ill) assist facilities in maintaining compliance with new federal regulations for prevention of pressure ulcers as outlined in Medicare Tag F314. The new Medicare guidelines raise the expectation for patient care and assessment, while narrowing the definition of unavoidable pressure ulcers. Facilities now must follow an expanded protocol in assessing and taking steps to prevent pressure ulcers. These suspension boots assist in adherence to the new procedures as it relates to heel pressure ulcers.
The boots aid treatment and prevention of heel pressure ulcers by eliminating pressure from the heel. The heel is lifted with an elevation pad and suspended in protective space, transferring pressure from the heel to the lower leg. In prevention regimens, the boots can be used with patients who are immobile or postoperative, as well as those suffering from diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or dietary deficiencies.
The product is also ideal in cases of foot drop, flaccid paralysis (non-spastic), pre- and post-operative hip fractures, and skin grafts.

This feature allows for quick cleanup in the emergency department where time is crucial.
